Bowman receives Outstanding Service Award

Ron Bowman is the recipient of the 2017 Kentucky Pork Producers Outstanding Service Award.

Bowman retired in January from his long held position as the University of Kentucky Extension Agent for Agriculture in Nelson County.

Bowman first became involved with the KPPA board in the 1980’s as a representative from the Kentucky Association of County Agriculture Agents, the professional association for ag agents. For over 25 years he has served as the representative to the KPPA and helped facilitate cooperation between pork producers and the extension service.

Bowman has also been very involved in youth swine events such as the swine shows at the Kentucky State Fair and the North American International Livestock Expo. He says that he always tried to reach out to new agents and help them get involved with the KPPA and swine events.

Reflecting on his time working with the KPPA, Bowman says the most rewarding part was working with “good people.”

“It started at home with the local group, they have always supported anything I asked them for… but more than that they are friends,” said Bowman.
Bowman says the “good people” were found statewide.

“Getting to work with folks like Mike Ovesen and Bonnie Jolly has been a true pleasure,” said Bowman.

“I have so much respect for the directors and the job they do. These folks continually give their time, knowledge and leadership to not only the pork industry but to agriculture as a whole.”

When presented with his award, Bowman reminded the audience that even though he was retiring and would no longer be serving in the same capacity, he would still be a part of KPPA activities.
“Cindy and I have enjoyed our relationship with this group and look forward to continuing in the future,” said Bowman.

Whitney Carman, agriculture agent from Grayson County, will be serving as the new KPPA representative from the Kentucky Association of County Agriculture Agents. Bowman says he personally recruited Carman and feels confident that she will carry on the many years of cooperation between the extension service and KPPA.
